BGE Warns Customers to be Aware of Utility Imposters and to Always be Vigilant About Personal and Home Safety

Individuals may misrepresent themselves as BGE employees in person or over the telephone in order to steal money, obtain credit card information or gain entry into customers’ homes

BALTIMORE (April 12, 2013) – Baltimore Gas and Electric Company (BGE) cautions customers to be aware of individuals who may pose as a BGE employee either in person or over the telephone in an attempt to steal money and other valuables by gaining access to customer homes or businesses or to gain credit card information. Imposters may wear “official-looking” clothing and carry fake credentials.

“The safety of our customers and employees is a top priority, and we encourage our customers to be vigilant about their safety in their homes and businesses,” said Jeannette M. Mills, vice president and chief customer officer for BGE. “Although it is rare for a BGE representative to require entry into the customer’s home, if the entry is requested, the customer should always ask to see photo identification. All BGE employees and contractors carry company identification badges, which should be visible at all times, displaying their name, photograph and identification number.”

Recently, BGE learned of a scam targeting its customers over the telephone. The callers claim to represent BGE and tell customers their service is scheduled to be terminated and that they should make a payment by purchasing a “Green Dot” Visa credit card. The customers are then directed to call another phone number where information is obtained from the credit card and the monetary value is removed from the card. This is a scam and the funds are not being used for a BGE bill. To avoid this specific scam, customers can ask for the name on the account, the account address and the exact past-due balance. If the caller cannot provide that information, customers should not provide any type of payment or financial information.

BGE offers customers safe, convenient ways to make payments including calling the BGE customer contact center at 800.685.0123, online at bge.com, by mail and at authorized America’s Cash Express and Global Express locations. For any questions about accepted BGE payment methods, or to verify the identification of any persons requesting customer information or entry into a home or business, contact BGE at 800.685.0123. Customers can also find information about payment options and protecting themselves and their families against utility imposters at bge.com. If customers are contacted as part of this scam, the company asks them to call local law enforcement and the BGE Customer Contact Center immediately at 800.685.0123.

If at any time, customers are concerned for their safety, they should contact 911. As a reminder, BGE no longer accepts cash payments in the field and generally only requires entry into a customer’s home in response to gas or electric emergencies, to check BGE equipment, read BGE meters or to start or stop service. BGE regularly advises customers about imposters and how to avoid becoming a victim in its monthly bill insert, BGE Connections.

BGE works closely with local law enforcement to address these types of issues, but also urges customers to take an active role in ensuring their safety against imposters by taking the following steps:

Customers should never open their door to someone they don’t recognize and should always ask for a photo ID through the door or window, especially if you did not request a visit from BGE.

All BGE employees and contractors carry company identification badges, displaying their name, photograph and identification number. To verify a BGE employee’s identity or work being done at your home, call BGE at 800-685-0123.

Customers who encounter suspicious activity or suspected utility imposters are urged to contact the police immediately.

BGE encourages customers to share these safety tips with elderly family members, friends and children. For more information, visit bge.com.

In addition, BGE customers have the option of purchasing natural gas and electricity from third-party suppliers and representatives of these companies may contact customers in person, by mail or telephone seeking their business. They may also ask to see the customer’s BGE bill. Representatives of third-party suppliers should carry identification from the company for which they work, not BGE. Customers should not hesitate to ask to see their badge and verify their identification. For more information on customer choice, visit bge.com/choice.

  • What a great day at the Heights!
  • Today we continued in our series on financial stewardship. Leading up to Easter and the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection, I’m trusting that God will resurrect the finances of people in our church as we apply his principles to our money.
  • The series is called Cashin’ Out. You could probably imagine how much fun I’ve been having with that title.
  • Today’s message was on Defeating Debt. I was astounded by the information I learned about consumer debt in preparation for this message. The average American household has about $15,000 in just credit card debt.
  • We can’t be truly financially free until we’re free from debt. Many of us a praying for a blessing God has already given us, but we can’t enjoy it because of debt. Click here to  listen to how to defeat debt.
  • During the message I challenged our members to cut up and cancel their credit cards. One person took me up on that offer so far.
  • Wednesday at Bible Study, we’ll dialogue more about this credit issue, cut up more credit cards, and pray God’s supernatural blessing on our credit and finances.
  • One of our new members approached me after service last week to express how much his life has changed since coming to our church. These are the types of conversations that make my job the best job in the world!
  • A lady who has been attending our church for the last few weeks with her sons came up to me after service with one complaint: The service is too… SHORT! She said that even her 10 year old asked, “It’s over already!?!” I told her that I’d rather him ask that than, “When is it going to be over!?!” LOL.
  • This past week I submitted Chapter 4 of my doctoral dissertation for review by my committee at Regent School of Divinity. I only have one more chapter to write! I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
  • I’ve been really enjoying The Bible movie that has been airing Sunday evenings on the History Channel. You should check it out!
  • This coming Saturday, I will be honored among 20 Impactful Pastors in our area at the  Praise 104 Prayer Breakfast. This is an overwhelming honor for myself and our church.
  • Have a great week!

  • Today was one of many days where I just love being the Pastor of The Heights!
  • I’m so proud of where we are as a church and so excited about where we’re going! We’re on the brink of something huge, and the pieces are falling into place.
  • Today my big brother and good friend Pastor Darryl Godlock of Calvert County Baptist Church shared God’s Word with us.
  • I don’t just throw that term around. I have a handful of men that I call,”Big Brother.” These men pour into my life and encourage me like crazy. I’m so grateful for them.
  • Pastor G’s message was “Giving God Your Best” from Psalm 116. What a timely message after we just finished the “All Aboard” series. The audio is available on our website. Click here to take a listen.
  • Having Pastor G step in for me today was an amazing blessing. I needed this week to concentrate on my dissertation work for Regent University. I cleared a major hurdle Saturday by turning in Chapter 3 of my dissertation to my committee chair after a week of hard work.
  • Chapter 3 is the longest and most grueling chapter. It took me much longer than I thought to complete it, but I’m so glad to see the light at the end of the tunnel.
  • Our Men’s Praise Team was on fire today! First time I’ve EVER seen the congregation call for an encore! LOL.
  • I’m so proud of how our band has come together. I don’t know of any church in the DMV who has a band as talented and committed without breaking the bank to pay for it. All of our musicians play because they love God and they love The Heights… without expecting a check!
  • I heard that we had an incredible turnout for our Homeless Feeding Outreach on Saturday. We had several people sign up during the All Aboard series. I’m proud to see that they followed through.
  • Have you hit me up with me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram? I’d love to connect with you through social media.
  • Thanks for your prayers for Levi. He had a successful surgery this past Monday. Hopefully this procedure will help him to walk better. He has a cast on his lower leg that will stay on for 6 weeks, and a brace that goes above his knee that will stay for 2 weeks. Please continue to pray for my big guy.
  • I’m excited about next month’s WYCB Praise Breakfast where I will be honored among 20 Impactful Pastors in the DC area. What an amazing honor! I’d love for you to grab a ticket and spend the morning of March 16th hanging out with me!
  • Have a great week!

  • Great Day at The Heights!
  • Today I preached the final message of our “All Aboard” series. This has been an incredible series as God has been equipping our church to take the next step by getting everyone connected.
  • Today’s message was “Drop the Nets” from Matthew 4:18-22. We discussed these disciples would make the drastic decision to drop everything and follow Jesus.
  • The audio from today’s message is up now on our website. Click here to listen.
  • I never get tired of seeing people come to Christ through the ministry of our church. Every week it’s like a brand new experience for me as people make decisions for Christ at the Heights.
  • One of the immediate responses from this message was for people to get connected with our outreach ministries. We had a great response with people signing up for our homeless outreach as well as our Easter Community Outreach. Our people are ready to change the world!
  • Although the series is over, we’re holding on to this “All Aboard” concept as our theme for the year. Our church will only make significant strides forward as we get everyone connected. We’ll revisit this theme often throughout the year.
  • This week we baptized 7 new believers this past Wednesday. Once again, seeing the joy on someone’s face as they declare to the world their new life in Christ NEVER gets old.
  • My plate has been very full lately. Along with my pastoral responsibilities, I’m also teaching a class at Bethel Seminary and working on my doctoral dissertation at Regent University. I must admit that I’m a bit overwhelmed right now.
  • As much as I love all that I’m doing, I’ll be glad to transition from this season and remove some some of these high-level responsibilities from my plate.
  • My temperament is one that allows me to put my head down and push through. This means I’m normally oblivious to how hard I’m working. The fact that I notice it means that First Lady LaVera must be VERY overwhelmed with my non-stop schedule. I’m grateful for her patience with me. She is worthy of triple-honor.
  • This week I learned that I was selected to be honored among 20 impactful pastors in the DC area by WYCB and Praise 104. I’m so overwhelmed and appreciative of the incredible church that I serve. I’m only as impactful as the great people I’m blessed to lead.
  • The 11th Annual Prayer & Praise Breakfast hosting this honor will be held on March 16th. More details are available.
  • Levi has surgery on his foot on Monday. This simple tendon lengthening surgery will hopefully allow him to plant his right foot better and have more stability in walking. We appreciate your prayers for our little guy.
  • Praying that y’all have a great week! Love you.

  • Happy New Year from The Heights!
  • Sorry for the long hiatus from dumping. It’s a new year and I commit to reflect here more consistently.
  • Today was a difficult end to a difficult week. Today I just felt like my mind and spirit was weak.
  • I’m sure all Pastors have those rare Sundays where our prayer is, “Lord, just get me through this message and get me home without messing anything up!” Today was that day! LOL.
  • Today I taught through our core values (or, The Code) as a continuation of a series called, “All Aboard.”
  • As always in situations where I’m confronted with my weakness, God showed that His strength is made perfect in my weakness. We saw multiple decisions for Christ today despite my haste to escape!
  • If you missed it, audio of today message is up on our site. This is something that everyone connected to (or interested in) our church needs to hear! Click here to listen.
  • The purpose of this series is to rally our members around God’s vision for The Heights in 2013. I believe He has great things in store for us this year, but we must have all our members connected and engaged in ministry in order to accomplish His plan!
  • I started this series last week with a video of our 2012 Year in Review. What an amazing representation of God’s power flowing through our church this year. Check it out! Let me know what you think.
  • Our band was on fire today! I’m amazed at how God has blessed our music ministry and where we are now compared to 2 years ago! If you haven’t experienced us in a while, you’re missing out!
  • After church, I had one of the most frustrating and exhausting conversations I’ve had in my short time as a Pastor. When you see people you love so deeply make unwise moves, it truly affects you as a pastor.
  • The tough week in the Manning household all started Monday morning when Levi sprained his foot going downstairs to catch the school bus. My poor buddy hasn’t walked or been to school since.
  • If that weren’t enough, severe colds hit the house this week. Mine hit Wednesday and put me out for 2 days. First Lady’s hit Thursday morning, and we found out about Reuben’s double ear infection on Friday! Geez.
  • I missed Bible Study this week because I was sick, and God showed up mightily! I’m so proud and excited about how people stepped up, we didn’t miss a beat and God was glorified. Some members even stepped into some new roles and used gifts we didn’t know they had! That’s what “All Aboard” is all about.
  • I’m blessed to be accomplishing on of my life goals this year. I was approached several months ago by Bethel Seminary of the East to teach a class on The Gospels. I’m three weeks into my class and this is an exciting challenge! It has also added a great deal to an already full plate, so I appreciate your prayers.
  • Although my beloved Skins got bounced from the playoffs, it’s great to see the Ravens secure their spot in the Super Bowl today. I’ve had the honor of speaking at their chapel services and building with some of their players. Bernard Pollard came out to the Heights before the season started. Proud to cheer for my 2nd favorite team in the Super Bowl!
  • Great week ahead. Praying God’s best for you.

Love y’all!

levibday
  • I’m speechless. What a day!
  • It was a non-stop, fast paced day… but WOW!
  • I had the honor of preaching at my home church, First Baptist Church of Glenarden, this morning at 10am. What a great honor to share God’s Word at the church that shaped me into the Christian I am today.
  • Pastor Jenkins asked his three “sons in the ministry,” Pastor Darryl Godlock, Pastor Tyrone Stevenson and myself to preach while he was out of town. This is a HUGE deal for my brothers and I. We were scared to death! LOL.
  • When Pastor Jenkins isn’t at FBCG, he brings some of the best preachers in the country. To think that he trusted us with the FBCG pulpit is overwhelming.
  • As always, I had a blast preaching! I did a message called “Unleashed,” discussing the importance of overcoming the pain of your past. This message was challenging, convicting, encouraging and fun all at the same time!
  • The highlight of the message was an illustration I did with cake ingredients. Trying to explain what happened and how hilarious it was wouldn’t do it justice… you had to be there! LOL.
  • Twitter, Instagram and Facebook went crazy after the cake illustration.
  • After I got done at FBCG, First Lady LaVera and I hustled over to the Heights just in time for me to walk into the pulpit and continue our “Equipped” series.
  • This week we talked about how the gospel is our footgear. The audio of “It’s Gotta Be the Shoes” will be available soon. Stay tuned.
  • It’s always fun when our kids lead us in worship. They bring so much energy to the room! I think most of the adults had gotten tired by the 4th song though!
  • As our church is growing rapidly, we are beginning to max out space and volunteers in KIDZone. We’re praying for a solution to that, so…
  • I’m challenging all of the parents who benefit from KIDZone to give back. If you have kids go to KIDZone, I’m asking that you volunteer one Sunday per month for 3 months. That’s only three times with no obligations after that. Would you take me up on it?
  • We had representatives from Regent University at the Heights today. I’m a student at Regent and LOVE IT! Because of our affiliation with Project Bridges, any member of our church can receive a tuition discount at Regent if they attend. If you’re looking to extend your education, I recommend you check it out.
  • Our Anniversary Team is working hard to prepare for our Anniversary Celebration in a couple weeks. Although I’m not big on church anniversaries and such, I must admit that I’m very excited about this celebration.
  • I’m so excited to have started Bible Study back! Last Wednesday, we had an awesome worship experience led by Enduring Praise and began a series that will equip us with Biblical truth leading up to this years election. Join us Wednesday as we continue our “Your Bible and Your Ballot” discussion.
  • We celebrated Levi’s 4th Birthday this past week. He had a blast and you could tell he felt special. That is the BEST feeling as a dad to see your son enjoying his birthday.
  • Busy week ahead. Must catch up on work for school and church, but I’m most excited about officiating the wedding of two friends.
  • Have a great week! Love you.

  • I knew today was going to be incredible… But I didn’t know it would be THIS good!
  • I’ve been looking forward to this day for weeks. With today being the first day of the NFL season and the Sunday after Labor Day (usually a high church attendance day), it was the perfect storm… And we made the most of it at The Heights!
  • For the 3rd time this year, we had a “Family & Friends Day.” I’ve been challenging our members to invite people to church today. The prize for the person who brought the most 1st time guests was a $100 Visa Gift Card.
  • We’ve done this 3 times this year and it works like a charm! People get so competitive. LOL.
  • Also, of the 3 times we’ve done this, this is the second time that the person gave the gift card back to the church because they were so excited & thankful just to have their family at church! Wow!
  • Taking advantage of the high excitement of the new football season we had football themes throughout the day. Including a tailgate party after worship with great food and great football games on the big screen!
  • I began a new series today entitled “Equipped,” and had been planning for week’s to do a visual illustration in full football equipment.
  • I pulled it off. Helmet, pants,  pads, cleats, Under Armor padding, shoulder pads, gloves, eye black… Everything! Man, this message was SO MUCH FUN to preach.
  • The reaction of the people when I came from my office into the sanctuary was priceless. Members of our praise team had to hold in their laughter just to finish the song!
  • Shout out to Terry from District Heights Boys & Girls Club who let me borrow football equipment for today.
  • Today’s message was from the Ephesians 6 passage about the whole armor of God. “Walk out the door equipped for WAR.”
  • I get a huge rush seeing people get saved or rededicate themselves to Christ at the Heights. What a great response to the gospel today!
  • You can listen to the message by clicking here. The audio doesn’t really do it much justice. We’ll try to get the video up sometime soon.
  • Next week we’ll continue this series as we start breaking down the pieces of the armor. Bring a friend and meet me there.
  • What could make a great day greater? Yep, the Redskins handling the Saints in RGIII’s pro debut!
  • I travelled to Little Rock, Arkansas this week with Pastor Jenkins to celebrate the Pastoral installation of my friend Pastor Phillip Pointer at St. Mark Baptist Church. It was a great trip although I was exhausted when we got back.
  • Last Thursday was Part 2 of our Back to School Night Takeover. This time, we showed up at District Heights Elementary School to give away backpacks of free school supplies. What a great night. I’m so proud of our crew who turned out in great numbers to show love for our community.
  • My little brother Dillon is playing little league football for the same team that I played for when I was his age. Watching him play brings back so many memories.
  • Have a big week ahead with plenty of work to do. Hope you have a GREAT week. Remember to walk out the door equipped for WAR!

Love y’all!

  • What a day… what a day… (In my Erykah Badu voice)
  • That isn’t a bad thing, or a good thing… It was just a crazy day at The Heights. I loved EVERY MINUTE OF IT!
  • So as I pulled into the driveway of the church about 90 minutes before worship time, I get a call from one of our deacons telling me that the power is out on the whole block… Including our church. Wait… What!?!
  • I thought I was going to get to church and spend time getting my mind right for what would already be a fun and unusual message… God changed those plans!
  • So I walk in and see Sunday School classes and small groups meeting all over both of our buildings. Wherever they could find light, they were meeting and learning the Bible. Proud Pastor moment!
  • Of course we had to go directly into problem solving mode. What were we going to do? Well, the first thing we did was gather up as many people as we could find and PRAY!!!
  • Second thing we did was discuss what it would take to move worship outside. That’s when several of the men of our church went into action! Shirts and ties were coming off (it was communion Sunday) and we went to work!!! Another Proud Pastor Moment.
  • By 10:50 we had put up the tent, moved and arranged chairs outside and prepared tables. At 10:52… you guessed it… the power came back on!!! LOL.
  • Part of me was excited that we’d be worshipping in the air conditioning… Another part of me was disappointed because I had been working all week on this message, “Let’s Take It Outside!” Only God could have done that!
  • I was so excited about this message because I staged a fake fight to break out a few minutes after I started. Brian & D’Angelo sold it perfectly!
  • The message challenged us not to keep our Christian walk to ourselves in our church and homes… If God is doing big things… Let’s Take it Outside!
  • Amongst all the rush before service, we were unable to get video of the message, but you can listen to the audio by clicking here.
  • Today we worshipped with our 4 piece bad for the first time. Our pianist Darren had a rare Sunday off work and our new drummer Deron were there along with Chris (lead guitar) and Kevin (bass guitar). Man, the bad sounded GREAT. All I could do was worship with them and thank God for answered prayer!
  • Now we just have to pray that God give Darren a new job so he won’t have to miss any more Sundays!
  • I’m so excited about what God is doing with our music. This is just the beginning!
  • Last Monday we were blessed to take over Back to School Night at North Forestville Elementary School and give away free school supplies for the kids and families. What a great night to show love to our community. I was overwhelmed by the response. The kids loved the specialized backpacks and the parents and faculty were appreciative. Yes!
  • It ain’t over! We’re doing it again this Thursday at District Heights Elementary. Meet us there at 6:30pm!
  • Friday was Levi’s first day back at school. He had a blast. I think he and his teacher Ms. Cherry have a thing goin on! LOL.
  • Have a great week! Love y’all.

Pastor Bobby’s Sunday Brain Dump

  • Whoa! Water Sunday at The Heights was AMAZING! So many different aspects of today’s worship have me on cloud 9!
  • We usually do baptisms during the week, but I felt God telling me to do it a little differently this time. This was our first time trying it on a Sunday, and it was GREAT!
  • We baptized 3 people who were SO excited about their new life in Christ. I’m already jazzed up at baptism celebrations, but when the people are hyped I’m super-hyped!
  • Today I did a short message with a visual illustration. A small vase of oil and water showed us clearly how allowing God to have his way in your life will automatically push sin out. Although we are stained with sin, He is able and willing to make us “white as snow.” (Isaiah 1:18)
  • Sermon audio available online. Check it out and let me know what you think.
  • I’m already planning for the next time we’ll do a baptism at a regular service like this. I think we’ll do it again at Watchnight. Wouldn’t it be great to start the year with a new commitment to Christ?
  • Several weeks ago I asked y’all to pray with me that God would send us a drummer to complete our worship band. It seems like God may have answered our prayers. Deron played with us for the first time this weekend and has fit right in. He’s still in a probationary period, but our entire worship team is excited to have him!!!
  • I had the privilege of participating in the pre-game chapel service for the Baltimore Ravens this past week. God switched up what we did in chapel and it went GREAT.
  • Shout out to my friend Pastor Rod Hairston, who serves as the chaplain for the Ravens.
  • It was great to see my friend Bernard Pollard also.
  • After chapel, First Lady and I enjoyed the game from GREAT seats. We had a blast!
  • Im so excited about our school supplies outreach this week at North Forestville Elementary School. If you gave to our school supplies drive, meet us there to show the community how much Jesus loves them!
  • Hope you have a great week. Love y’all!
