Pastor Bobby’s Sunday Brain Dump

  • This by far was the most awkward weekend in my short time as Pastor of The Heights. I missed worship because First Lady LaVera and I are on vacation.
  • I hadn’t had a real vacation since I began this assignment in December 2010. That’s almost 2 years without missing a Sunday. I absolutely love my job. It’s hard work, but doesn’t feel like work so if I’m not careful I’ll overwork myself.
  • Our newest deacon, Darryl Clark, stood in my place and preached an incredible sermon on Answering God’s Call. Darryl has been such a faithful member of our team and I’m grateful for him.
  • The audio link to Darryl’s message is available online. Click here to listen.
  • Of course my heart and mind was in District Heights at 11 o’clock thinking about what was going on at home, but we were blessed to worship at Calvary Revival Church. What an awesome worship experience! I missed hearing Bishop McBath preaching, but God had a Word precisely for me from Bishop Brian Greene.
  • Our vacation actually started late last week with a tour of Nationals Park. We got to go to the dugout, the clubhouse and even throw pitches from the bullpen. Daddy had more fun than the boys!
  • This Tuesday, several of our members will be getting together to assemble the thousands of school supplies that our church has purchased for children in our community. I’m so proud of how our church responded to this challenge. If you want to put your hands on the fruit of your giving, be there Tuesday!
  • I’m so excited about this coming Sunday. We normally do our baptisms on Wednesdays, but we’re going to mix it up this week and have some on Sunday. I’m calling it Water Sunday and expecting God to do something we’ve never seen.
  • If you are ready to share with the world the new beginning you have in Christ by getting baptized, click here to let us know!
  • Vacation has been helpful and restful for us so far. We still have a few more days (so don’t call me. LOL), and will be back soon!
  • Can’t wait to see you! Have a great week.

Allow me to Reintroduce Myself – Part 5

  • What a super-fun day at The Heights!
  • We’ve been in Vacation Bible School all week, and today was the grand finale where the kids and leaders recap all the great songs, lessons and memories from the previous week.
  • VBS is one of the things that our church does VERY well. This year was no different. I’m so proud of our team of volunteers.
  • It’s always a great blessing to have our kids lead us in worship. They bring an unusual energy to our worship service. It gets the people goin!!!
  • The worship songs that come with the VBS curriculum are always great. One of them created a perfect segué into my message.
  • Today was part 4 of our “Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself” series. God used today’s message to reintroduce Himself to us as the God who loves unconditionally. This message was so encouraging for me to prepare… I’m glad it was also encouraging for our church as well.
  • Audio from today’s message is online now! Check it out by clicking here.
  • Today I tried out a new style of delivery that I picked up from Andy Stanley’s book “Communicating for a Change.” My big brother Pastor Keith Battle raves about this “one-point message” style. Today was the 2nd time I’ve tried it (both in this current series), and I must admit that I really like it.
  • Someone pulled me aside after service and said, “If anyone didn’t understand that message, they won’t understand anything!” Good indicator that this method is working.
  • Next Sunday we’ll conclude this series with a message that will hit home for many people. Bring a friend with you!
  • I love looking up and seeing the ushers searching for places to seat people. Especially during summer time.
  • If you’re a member or regular attender, I really need your help. Would you please commit to sitting in the first 6 rows of the sanctuary during worship? This will leave more room for guests and newcomers to sit in the back if that’s where they’re more comfortable.
  • I can’t wait to see how this summer momentum will carry us into the fall. Especially with the outreaches that we’re planning to close out the summer!
  • We’re in the middle of a School Supply drive where I’m challenging our church to give $2,000 so that we can purchase school supplies for children in our community. We’re less than half-way to our goal with just 2 weeks to go in the drive!
  • God has opened amazing doors for us into the Elementary Schools in our community. This outreach is simply good stewardship of the opportunities that God has given us!
  • I have this exciting idea for our next baptism celebration… possibly doing it during a Sunday service in August. If we can pull this off, it will be incredible! Stay tuned.
  • I have a lot of work yet to get done on my dissertation and I’m behind schedule. Going to hit it really hard this week. Could really use your prayers!

Have a great week! Love you.

wedding
  • Look at the love in this photo! That was truly one of the best days of my life.
  • Today First Lady LaVera and I celebrate our 6 year wedding anniversary. I’m so blessed to be married to her! She is such an amazing woman. Every day she reminds me that God made her perfectly for me.
  • I really should have seen it coming… but WOW! What an awesome day at The Heights!
  • From the time that I walked into the building, it seemed like everything that could go wrong, did. We had audio issues, video issues, volunteer issues, attitude issues and any other kind of issue you can think of.
  • It took me a little while to chill out, pray, and recognize that these were all signs that God had big plans. Whenever the enemy pulls out the stops trying to get us off our game, I know something BIG is about to happen.
  • In the end, Christ prevailed, several people made decisions to follow Him, and worship was incredible! Praise God!
  • I began a new series today called, “Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself.” Yes, I stole the line from Jay-Z, but I think it’s a fitting way to package this discussion on God’s attributes and how He invades our lives in order to show Himself to us in fresh ways.
  • Today I preached from Exodus 3. Moses’ encounter with God teaches us so much about God as well as ourselves.
  • I’m sure you’re waiting for the audio link… Here it is! Click here.
  • This series will appease the seminarian/theologian in me as we discuss the attributes of God. One of the greatest tensions as a preacher and pastor is to properly esteem theology while connecting it to the lives of the people. I think I did okay this week.
  • First Lady and I will celebrate our anniversary next weekend with a dinner cruise and other fun stuff. Today was just a chill day at home with the boys after a post-church brunch at IHOP.
  • I’m so proud of our events team that pulled together an incredible July 4th outreach for our community. Each year, the city puts on a fireworks show fit across the street from our church which draws hundreds of people from our community to our church lawn. We couldn’t ask for a better opportunity to engage our community!
  • We had a blast and enjoyed being a blessing! There are still some ways we could improve, so next year will be even better!
  • Looking forward to a great week! I pray that you’ll have a great one to!

Love y’all!

1024-18
  • Another incredible day at The Heights!
  • I was pleasantly surprised at our attendance today. Seeing our church continue to grow during the summer months is very exciting!
  • Today we handled Part 2 of The Takeover, answering some tough (and unexpected) questions. This by far was the biggest challenge given me by The Takeover yet. I love these types of challenges!
  • I did end up answering the question that I told y’all about. I truly think many people had the same question, so I felt obligated to address it. I changed some words in the question to make it more PG13-rated rather than R-rated. Maybe we’ll throw the video up on Facebook later this week.
  • If you want to hear the audio, you don’t have to wait. Listen to my responses to questions about the Bible, sex, marriage, in-laws, and more by clicking here.
  • I have some decisions to make that may be necessary for our church to go to the next level in ministry… but I have to be careful. One of the hardest things about being a Pastor is the tension between leading the church forward while protecting the hearts of the individual people.
  • A terrible storm hit the DMV this weekend that has left several million homes woot power for several days. It doesn’t help that temperatures have hit triple digits this weekend as well. Today we opened our church for a few hours as a cooling station. We had a couple dozen people come hang out, play games and stay cool. I love the opportunity to engage the community and meet needs in fun ways.
  • Speaking of which, we’ll have that opportunity again this Wednesday as our whole community will descend upon our church lawn to watch fireworks. We’ll roll out the red carpet for them and have a concert on the lawn with Critical Revelation Band. So excited about this outreach! If you’re in the area, please come hang out with us!
  • We’ve been hard at work over the past few weeks working on a new Small Groups system in our church. Yesterday we rolled that system out to our members. I’m so excited about this huge page turn in the life of our church. I believe this will help us to get people plugged in and help them grow in their walk with Jesus.
  • I’m also excited about the new groups that we’re beginning next week. We have groups for a wide range of people that meet a wide range of needs. If you’re looking for a great place to connect and grow, click here to take a look at the options for our small groups.
  • First Lady LaVera’s dad has been visiting us this weekend. My father in law is one of my favorite people in the world!  Having him hang out with us has been so much fun, both for me and the boys! He loves his grandsons so much!
  • One of the things that my Father in Law demanded we do this weekend is to go to FBCG and see Pastor Jenkins. He heard Pastor Jenkins preach in Dallas a couple years ago and has been talking about “Running with the Horses” ever since.
  • This past Wednesday we had an AWESOME Baptism Celebration for a handful of folks who have made decisions to follow Christ at our church. I was so overwhelmed how each of them expressed that connecting with our church catapulted them into a significant life change in Christ. I was fighting back tears the whole time.
  • God kept me up late last night giving me vision for our next message series. Next Sunday I’ll begin a series called, “Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself”  about the character of God and how he invades our lives.
  • Got a lot of work to handle this week, including plugging away at my dissertation. Hope y’all have a great week!

Love you!

kamoda
  • On a high after seeing God’s power so clearly today at The Heights.
  • Sometimes as a Pastor it feels like you’re trudging through the summer months of low attendance and hot weather. Today was definitely not one of those days!
  • Today Marked the return of “The Takeover.” This was an experiment that I tried earlier this year where I took an entire sermon time to answer questions that are presented to me by our members and attendees. It was such a success earlier this year that I had to do it again.
  • You guessed it… It was a great success today also! This clearly scratches an itch that people really have. I’m glad to be able to do this.
  • I’m actually surprised at how unconventional this is. It occurs to me that people are hungry to have their questions answered… and the church has often failed to do so.
  • We spent so much time answering questions today that our service ran WAY over time. I apologized profusely for running long, but the people kept egging me on! LOL.
  • You definitely want to hear the audio of today’s message. Click here right now!
  • We had an amazing response to the altar call today. Seeing God’s power at work in people through our church is so exciting and humbling.
  • I also feel God saying that we haven’t seen anything yet!
  • Today I got one last question given to me for The Takeover. I REALLY have to pray on this one y’all. It’s such a gloves-off, super-real question that I feel like I MUST answer it. It wouldn’t be “The Takeover” if I didn’t. But uhhhh… Yeah. Will definitely get in some trouble if I do. Sheesh.
  • I was so blessed to see one of my best childhood buddies in church today with his awesome wife. So proud to see Tony still living his dream!
  • Spent this week in Fresno, CA at the Annual ABA Messengers Meeting. Our church is affiliated with the American Baptist Association.
  • The ABA is a predominantly Anglo organization. Our affiliation goes back decades and is a long, nuanced story. First Lady LaVera and I being the only young, black couple there (out of a few hundred people) made this week a very interesting experience for many reasons. LOL.
  • This week I had the honor of meeting one of the previous pastors of FBCDH, Pastor Randy Cloud. What a humble, yet powerful and revered Man of God! It was truly an honor.
  • I also had the privilege of meeting one of the global missionaries that our church supports. Shin Kamoda is a missionary to Japan. He shared with us the wonderful ministry work he is doing there.
  • By far, the best part about this week in Cali… we got a great deal on a convertible Mustang for a rental car.
  • Baptism celebration this week! Yes!!!
  • Next week we have a great opportunity to serve our community as the whole neighborhood will come to our corner to watch fireworks. We’re going to have an outside concert with my boys from CRB. So excited about improving upon this outreach from last year.
  • Starting back on P90X this week. Saw some pics of myself on Facebook and not liking how full my face looks. Time to bring it!!!
  • Have a GREAT week. Love y’all.

SchwartzWedding
  • Whew!!! Finally get a chance to wooosah after a long, busy week. Wooosah!
  • Today was still a great day at The Heights. I just had a lot to do in a small period of time because of the busy week.
  • Sometimes when I get really busy, I start going too fast. When i start going too fast, I start getting frustrated with little things and also start doing silly things. This was one of those weekends.
  • Silly things like what? How about as I was walking out of my office to preach, I noticed that I had put the wrong pants on! Before I left the house, I grabbed the right jacket and the wrong pants, so I preached today in a mismatched suit!
  • At least they were both grey suits… Maybe people didn’t notice… Hopefully. LOL.
  • Today we finished the four-part marriage series, “Mr. & Mrs. Right” with a discussion on “Love Languages.”
  • I highly recommend Dr. Gary Chapman’s book on this subject. It will breathe new life into your marriage, guaranteed.
  • They say a picture is worth a thousand words. I used a visual illustration to explain the concept of the Love Tank. Stuff like this makes preaching fun.
  • The audio of the message is up on the website. You can listen here.
  • Has this series been a blessing for you? I’d love to hear about it. Shoot me an e-mail or hit me on Facebook.
  • I think we’re starting to see that slight summer attendance dip…
  • I’m SO excited about next weekend. On Saturday, our Men’s Ministry is hosting a Car Show/Cookout. We’ll have custom and classic cars & bikes on our lot next weekend along with a lot of great food!
  • On Sunday, Bernard Pollard from the Baltimore Ravens will join us in worship and will share from his experiences in the NFL. This is going to be so fun!
  • Tonight I went to night service at Reid Temple AME Church just to get some care-free worship in. As a pastor, you don’t always get to worship freely at your own church because there is so much on your mind from logistics to sermon. It was great to get to experience God in Worship and Word that I had nothing to do with planning!
  • Do you know of any great churches in the DMV that have night services? Let me know.
  • This past week I was able to celebrate one of the big milestones in my academic journey to get my doctorate. I passed my integrative exam and successfully defended my dissertation proposal. I still have a lot of writing, revising and defending to do, but this is a big accomplishment!
  • Saturday was a crazy busy day. After spending the morning with our leaders and volunteers at our Leadership Huddle, I had the honor of performing the wedding of my friends from FBCG, Jason and Angel Schwartz. The wedding started a few minutes late (as expected), but went great. I’m excited about their union and the great testimony eye will be.
  • Please pray for Levi this week. He’ll spend a couple days in the hospital for tests. Tough few days ahead for the little buddy and Mom & Dad. Thanks!
Have a great week! Love you.

  • Sorry for the two-week fall off from posting. I’ve been writing, but haven’t been able to post for whatever reason.
  • Today was a fun day at The Heights. All types of fun things happening at once!
  • Today we celebrated our youth who have been diligent in their studies both scholastically and spiritually. It was great to recognize our high school graduates and our young people who are consistent in church ministry!
  • After church, we had an International Luncheon for the kids where we had different foods from other cultures. We do this every year and it’s fun to eat some “what is this again?” food!
  • I continued a message series on marriage called “Mr. & Mrs. Right.” This series has been really fun to preach and has been helpful to both singles and married folks. The main idea is that “Marriage is not about FINDING the right person, but BEING the right person.”
  • Today’s message was “Think Like Mr. Right.” We talked about the great influence that women have on the men in their lives if they use their power correctly. It’s important to know that a woman’s most powerful voice doesn’t come out of her mouth!
  • I love Steve Harvey… But he’s making millions telling women what God has been saying for thousands of years.
  • Audio of “Think Like Mr. Right” is available online now. Take a listen by clicking here.
  • If I’m not mistaken… I think an Erykah Badu song came onto our speakers right in the middle of my sermon! Don’t ask.
  • We also might have to find a subtle way to remind our folks to silence our cell phones during worship. LOL.
  • I thought our worship team was really on their game today. They sounded great and had a great, worshipful line-up. Really proud of the strides they are making.
  • I think a drummer would really take our worship sound to the next level. Pray with me that God will send us someone to flex the sticks.
  • Had an awesome afternoon nap cuddling with my big buddy Levi. He’s such a handful (First Lady LaVera calls him “the Grizzly”), but he brings so much joy to our family. Please keep him and his health in prayer.
  • Our family had dinner tonight with my big brother Pastor Darryl Godlock, First Lady Rose and family. They are a great encouragement to us and hold us accountable in keeping our marriage strong. I appreciate the investment that they make into our lives!
  • This week I had the honor of speaking at the Young-Adult Conference for the African Christian Fellowship. Mine was one of only two non-African names on the conference agenda, and I was received like family and made a bunch of new friends! I joked that they had made me an honorary African for the day! LOL.
  • Over the past 15 weeks, I’ve been teaching a class on Expository Preaching at FBCG. We finished our class this past Thursday and I can’t say how proud I am of all my students who worked so hard and have grown impressively in their preaching. This is one of my favorite things to do and I had a blast teaching… but I’m glad to have my Thursday evenings back!
  • Tonight I watched Oprah interview Mayor Cory Booker, the Mayor of Newark, New Jersey. I am so impressed and encouraged by his story and his passion to be an influential leader in his community. I had a couple of “wow” moments listening to him. What a strong leader!
  • I have a really big week ahead. This Thursday, I’ll go before my dissertation committee at Regent University to defend my dissertation proposal/Chapter 1. This is a HUGE milestone in my doctoral journey. I appreciate your prayers for me this week as I prepare to get grilled!
  • God is so good! I’m doing everything I ever dreamed of doing. Thanks for taking the ride with me.
  • I really want to connect with you! Make sure you hit me on Facebook and Twitter!
Have a great week!
